TEXTILE MASTER CLASSES

REVIVAL OF SILK ROAD TRADITIONS

BUKHARA, UZBEKISTAN

October 22 - 28, 2017

This event is designed to enhance understanding of textile development and to experience first-hand the revival of Silk Road traditions, providing exposure to Uzbek artisan skills, including a museum visit. Additional workshops will provide exploration of the current trends to revive ancient textile designs and use of natural dyes. Three levels of workshops are offered by local masters: from demonstrations to small-group participation, and the unique opportunity for a one-day immersion in one or more disciplines.

 

 

PROGRAM DETAIL

Oct 22

 

Arrival
Arrive in Tashkent. Transfer to your selected mode of transportation to Bukhara (Private car, train, or plane) and transfer to your accommodations in Bukhara.

Oct 23

 

Bukhara welcomes you!
Welcome meeting at the Bukhara Artisan Development Center. Our staff will pick you up at your accommodations and escort you to the venue. Introduction to the arts and crafts of the Center by the director, Matluba Bazarova: brief history of the center and short demonstrations by artisans of the center.
Walking tour of this ancient Silk Road city to experience the sights and sounds and familiarize you with the relative relationship of your lodgings, the venue, and the workshops.
For lunch, experience the local traditional Uzbek dish – Pilaf.
After lunch we continue with small-group guided sight-seeing tours of the ancient monuments and trading domes.

After lunch we visit the Sitorai MohiHosa Museum of Decorative Applied Art at the Summer Palace to appreciate both historic and contemporary Suzani designs.

Participative Workshops
Small group (4-5) interactive workshops – Half-day: 3.5 hrs in the morning and afternoon. Attendees select two from a list of these six options.

Carpet Weaving
Silk Weaving
Silk Embroidery
Gold Embroidery
Dyeing
Block Printing

In the carpet and silk weaving classes the participants will learn how to set up the loom and you will be able to try the actual weaving. In the embroidery classes participants will learn to draw patterns. They will be shown stitch variations and you will work on a small piece to take home. You will be given a traditional design and enough silk thread to finish your master piece at home.

Our speakers are all masters and are well-known in their field. They have degrees, have traveled and lectured abroad, and have been featured in trade publications. Our workshop masters are 3rd, 4th, and even 7th generation artisans who have perfected their skills over the decades and traveled often to study designs and trends in different regions and countries.
